Taylor Swift’s Fearless

Published by BW at 4:43 pm under Album Reviews Edit This

It’s fairly uncharacteristic of me to listen to this genre of music, but after watching Taylor Swift’s performance at the Grammys, I decided to check out her album, Fearless.

The album is pretty much what I expected; pop-country music performed by a talented 19-year-old (Swift) and her backing band (even more talented).

Album opener, Fearless, gets right down to business. There’s acoustic guitar, pop-drums, and Taylor’s crystal clear voice; can you say pop-country? The vocal melodies are nice, and the recordings are flawless.

Fifteen, was the song that Swift performed live at the Grammys with Miley Cyrus. As a twenty-something male, listening to this song makes me feel absolutely ridiculous - I’m guessing I wasn’t included in the target market. The song appears to be about a fifteen year old girl falling in love and then getting her heart broken. It seems pretty lame, but the song is actually one of my favorites on the album. The vocals are amazing, and the choruses can be described in one word: epic.

The song, White Horse, made it to #13 on Billboard’s Hot 100 without being released as a single or any promotion - not an easy task. It’s a fairly soft song with personal lyrics and a sweet sounding acoustic. It wasn’t as memorable as Fifteen, but I can definitely see the attraction to this song.

Change was the first song on the album to make it’s way to a position on the charts. The verses sound great, but the chorus just doesn’t pull me in. It’s one of the “harder” songs of the 13. The first single, Love Story, is another one that doesn’t appeal to me. The lyrics are way too childish (way more than Fifteen, surprisingly…). The lyrics prevented me from taking this song seriously, but I guess it could appeal to the younger crowd.

Overall, Fearless is an extremely solid pop-country album. Taylor Swift is obviously an talented woman, and at only 19 this album is a huge feat. I’m sure she’ll be making great music for a long time to come.

Sincerely,

BW.
