Scar Tissue by Anthony Kedis
I recently read Anthony Kedis‘ autobiography, Scar Tissue. For those of you who don’t know, he’s the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
As well as being loaded with interesting information about the band, this book also indulged some amazing secrets of Kedis’ childhood. A childhood that anyone would describe as abnormal.
Raised largely by his drug-dealer father, Anthony began abusing drugs and alcohol quite early in his life and was often exposed to sex and violence. He became addicted to several drugs by the time he formed the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The information about the band is extremely interesting if you have any interest in the band. Even if you’re not a huge fan (I’m not) this book will completely change the way you look at them and listen their music. I wasn’t able to put the book down until I was finished.
I had no idea that Kedis was still abusing drugs after the release of Californication, and for some reason this was a shock for me. I remember listening to that album and covering the songs in my first band.
Near the end of the book Kedis focuses more on his drug rehabilitation rather than the activities of his band. It didn’t ruin the book or anything, but I would have liked to know more about his relationships with his band mates and what they were up to at that time. His references to drummer Chad Smith were pretty funny - Chad was just Chad. It seems he wasn’t as close as the other members.
Since reading this book I’ve unearthed a copy of Red Hot Chili Peppers live at Slane Castle. It’s an amazing performance, and it’s interesting watching the band play since learning so much about their lives.
I would highly recommend this book!
Sincerely,
BW.

It’s a really interesting read. It completely changed the way I listen to their music now…
